Controversial time change
March 21, 2023
The appropriate time for the latitude of Poland is wintertime, i.e. Central European Time -
Explains Karol Wojcicki from the Copernicus Science Center.
This is why a clockwise shift of time from 2 out of 3 won't help us.
In our place, 12 o'clock coincides with the time when the sun rises above Poland. If we
switch to Eastern European Time tonight, we will use a time that is more suitable for our
eastern neighbours, i.e., for Belarus, and thanks to this we will have the sun setting an hour
later and rising an hour later, but we will not save energy on this
The introduction of summer, i.e., moving the clocks forward one hour in the spring and
summer, was supposedly first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century. This was
to help better match the time of human activity to the hours with the most sunlight and bring
savings. That is why daylight-saving time is referred to in English as "daylight saving time".
In Poland, time change was introduced in the interwar period, then in 1946-1949, 1957-1964,
and since 1977 it has been used continuously.
The bi-annual time change is intended to contribute to more efficient use of daylight and
energy savings, although opinions on these benefits are divided
The time change has several health consequences, including sleep disturbances.
What's more, the research of specialists from the University of Alabama in Birmingham
(USA) also shows that moving the clock hands forward in spring can be 10 percent. increase
the risk of a heart attack.
Researchers from the Finnish University of Turku, on the other hand, showed that putting the
clock forward one hour and disrupting the circadian rhythm increases the risk of ischemic
stroke, but only temporarily, but still.
So, do we really still need this time change?
