Dominican Fair

April 28, 2023

The tradition of the Dominican Fair is 750 years old and has been organized in Gdańsk at the beginning of August since 1260, when Pope Alexander IV allowed the Gdańsk Dominicans to grant 100-day indulgences on the occasion of their founder's day. The fair was connected with the indulgence mass and was supposed to encourage the faithful. Over time, it turned into a very important holiday, attended by merchants from all over Europe, as well as the nobility and the king himself. Almost everything was traded here, and the fair was accompanied by performances by artists and various shows.

Referring to this beautiful tradition, today's Dominican Fair has become an international event. It always starts on the last Saturday in July and lasts 3 weeks. At that time, about 1,000 merchants, craftsmen, collectors, and artists open their stands. Here you can buy things that cannot be found anywhere else, original jewellery, ceramics, handicrafts, clothes, antiques and much more. In addition, a lot of gastronomic stands with regional products, also from abroad. The densely arranged stalls in the Main Town are visited by several million people every year.

The modern formula of the St. Dominika refers to the medieval traditions of the fair, i.e. trading and having fun. Every year the share of craftsmen, artists and collectors increases, and the fair trade is accompanied by several hundred hours of cultural and entertainment programme.

To this day, the Dominican Fair abounds in interesting events, it is worth being there at least once in a lifetime.
